The engineers AI can't touch

Andrej Karpathy said it best:

"You can outsource your thinking, but you can't outsource your understanding."

Everyone is worried that AI will replace engineers.

But AI isn't replacing engineers.

It's replacing shallow work.

AI can already write code, generate tests, navigate codebases, summarize documents, and even plan features.

What it can't do is understand the real problem.

It doesn't know why a product exists.
It doesn't know which tradeoff matters.
It doesn't know when something looks correct but is actually wrong.

That's still your job.

For decades, technical skill was the bottleneck.

Now intelligence is becoming cheap and abundant.

Direction is becoming scarce.

The most valuable engineers won't be the fastest coders.

They'll be the ones who can ask the right questions, make the right decisions, and guide AI toward the right outcome.

The future belongs less to programmers and more to directors.

So here's the uncomfortable question:

Are you using AI to deepen your understanding...

or to avoid building one? 👇
