Courage in the Face of War: Stories of Military Surgeons #veteran #respect

Memorial Day is not a celebration. It's a debt acknowledged.
.
This Memorial Day, I'm honoring the American service members who gave their lives in defense of their country — and the men and women of the military medical corps who served alongside them. The Army nurses. The Navy corpsmen. The flight surgeons. The combat medics. The orthopedic surgeons rebuilding shattered limbs in field hospitals from Antietam to Anzio to Anbar. They wore the uniform too.
.
Six American surgeons, six wars, one legacy:

MAJ. JONATHAN LETTERMAN (Civil War) — Medical Director of the Army of the Potomac. Built the first ambulance corps, three-tier evacuation system, and formal triage doctrine in American history. His Arlington headstone reads: "the originator of modern methods of medical organization in armies." Every modern trauma evacuation system descends from his work.
.
DR. MARY EDWARDS WALKER (Civil War) — The first female U.S. Army surgeon. Captured by Confederates in 1864 and held four months as a prisoner of war at Castle Thunder Prison. Awarded the Medal of Honor in 1865. Stripped of it in 1917 — she wore it anyway, until her death. Reinstated in 1977. Still the only woman ever to receive it.
.
DR. WALTER REED (Spanish-American War) — Led the U.S. Army Yellow Fever Commission in Cuba in 1900. Proved yellow fever was transmitted by mosquitoes, not foul air. Volunteers, including Army physicians, allowed themselves to be bitten to prove it. Some died. The discovery saved more American lives in the 20th century than any single medical advance before antibiotics.
.
COL. EDWARD CHURCHILL (WWII) — Chief Surgical Consultant for the Mediterranean Theater. Forced the U.S. Army to adopt delayed primary closure, whole-blood transfusion at the front, regional blood banks, and air evacuation. The protocols he established in 1943–1945 remain the foundation of combat wound care and civilian trauma surgery today.
.
COL. MICHAEL DEBAKEY (WWII / Korea) — Volunteered after Pearl Harbor. Authored the proposal that became the Mobile Army Surgical Hospital — the MASH unit. Saved thousands in Korea and Vietnam. Architected the Veterans Affairs Medical Research Program. Legion of Merit recipient. JAMA called him "the greatest surgeon ever."
.
DR. HAMPAR KELIKIAN (WWII veteran care) — Survived the Armenian Genocide and reached Chicago with two dollars and a rug. When a paralyzed 23-year-old veteran named Bob Dole came to him, shattered by German machine-gun fire in Italy, Kelikian operated seven times. Never charged a dime.
To those still serving: thank you. To those who came home: thank you. To those who did not: we remember you.
.
The work continues because of you.
