English @ the Movies: Give it a Shot

Welcome to English @ the Movies where you learn American English heard at the movies.
Nine Perfect Strangers is a series streaming on Hulu. It tells a story of nine rich people. Each are suffering from mental and physical pain and seeking help. Masha, the director of a health and wellness center offers a 10-day treatment plan. But, as the treatment begins, some patients question Masha’s method: Will it cause more hurt than healing?
Listen for the words “give this thing a shot.”
I’m not sure I’m really supposed to be here. My vote is, give this thing a shot. Open up a new door. Some doors are meant to stay closed.
What do you think it means to “give it a shot”?
A) To complete a project
Or
B) To attempt something

Listen again.
The answer is B, to attempt something. “Give it a shot” is similar to saying “give it a try.” Americans use the saying when they are unsure if what they are about to do will be successful, but they have enough hope to try.
And that’s English @ the Movies. I’m Dorothy Gundy.
