Refractory Plug Inspections & Replacement - Boiler Room Tip

When refractory is inspected it's important to first ensure that the boiler has cooled down significantly. Opening the fireside too soon could cause rapid cooling of the refractory and result in damage or shock to the boilers fireside. After the inspection or repairs are completed the door or plug as they are referred to should be replaced and bolts should be snugged up evenly. Use a bolting pattern that allows even compression of the gasket material. Once the boiler is back online it's then important to check these bolts to ensure they have not loosened through the temperature swings.
