„Mary Edwards (1705–1743), eine der reichsten Frauen ihrer Zeit, lehnte die Ehe mit einem extravaganten Ehemann ab, obwohl dies gleichbedeutend damit war, ihren Sohn für unehelich zu erklären. Sie war Hogarths Freundin und wohl seine bedeutendste Gönnerin im Jahrzehnt 1733–43. Das monumentale Porträt von Miss Edwards, die prächtige Juwelen und ein auffälliges rotes Kleid trägt, ist ein Meisterwerk in der Reihe von Hogarths imposanten Porträts der Mittelklasse, zu denen auch der berühmte Captain Coram gehört. Die offene Schriftrolle, die prominent neben dem Motiv zu sehen ist, setzt sich für die Tugenden der Freiheit und des Eigentums ein, die sie als Verwalterin eines großen Vermögens geschätzt hätte.
