Florent Schmitt: Sonate Libre en Deux Parties Enchaînées

Florent Schmitt
Sonate Libre en Deux Parties Enchaînées (ad modem clementis aquae)
John McLaughlin Williams, Violin
David Riley, Piano

Florent Schmitt's Sonate Libre is not just a great French violin sonata; it is among the very greatest violin sonatas in the repertoire. The title translates as "free sonata in two linked parts (in the manner of peaceful water) but as was Schmitt's wont, the title is also a play on words. It is a kaleidoscopic work that is extremely demanding of its performers. This is a live performance and pianist David Riley plays spectacularly. Phillip Nones has written sagaciously about this work and many other compositions by Schmitt at the Florent Schmitt website. Please consult the links below for a fascinating journey into the Sonate Libre and beyond.
