In this interview, Thomas Lee Reilly describes his experiences in the United States Army in Vietnam. He describes his childhood, his father's death when Reilly was only six, and his education. In 1967 he was offered a draft exemption and turned it down. He relates that his father and all of his uncles fought in World War II and he wanted to serve in their memory. After basic training, he volunteered for Officer Candidate School. He details that training as well as his entry into Vietnam. He details the effects of President Johnson's policies on the course of the war. He describes battles and their aftermath. He explains how he became a war correspondent and how he earned a Bronze Star. He talks of his post-war family and career as well as his philosophy of war and patriotism.
