THE BIG DEBATE SEASON 10 EPISODE 5 | CITIES AND RACISM

Vote on our poll: https://khetha.org.za/tasks/BD-5/

Which side of the tracks do you live on? Alex or Sandton? Khayelitsha or Constantia?

South Africans live in the most divided cities in the world. Our wealthiest residents own luxurious mansions that film stars in LA would envy, in gated estates or secure suburbs. The people who clean their homes and tend their gardens stay in urban slums. This reality was created by apartheid, but for 25 years it has changed little.

When we re-develop our neighborhoods, from Maboneng to Woodstock or Ushaka, we push out the poor. If you try to propose affordable housing in Sandton or Bishopscourt you’ll be hounded out of your local WhatsApp group by angry neighbours.

The poor black majority live far from jobs and services. Commuters in Diepsloot don’t have Gautrain or Rea Vaya.

Do we have a vision for integrated, livable cities? Can we break through the NIMBY chorus of people saying “Not In My Back Yard”.
