Astrakhan is a historic city of Russia, located in the upper reaches of the Volga River Delta, on eleven islands of the Caspian lowlands. Located some 1411 km from Moscow (by road), Astrakhan is the oldest settlement of the Lower Volga…
The original settlement of Astrakhan is believed to have been founded the second half of the 13th century, at a time when the Golden Horde, the medieval state in Eurasia, adopted the religion of Islam, and the Muslim clergy began to receive various privileges from the khans.During the 13th-14th centuries, the settlement became an important centre of trade in the Golden Horde. In 1459, the Astrakhan Khanate was formed and Astrakhan, by now a large fortified city, was adopted as their capital..

In 1552, Tsar Ivan IV conquered the Kazan Khanate and four years later, Russian troops took Astrakhan. Between 1587-1588, the construction of a wooden fortress occurred with solid walls and towers. The wooden fortress was replaced in stone by the end of the century..
In 1699 construction of the Assumption Cathedral began and took almost 12 years to complete. This was followed by the cathedral bell tower in 1710.
For seventeen months in 1670–1671, Astrakhan was held by Stenka Razin and his Cossacks who led a major uprising against the nobility and tsarist bureaucracy in southern Russia..
During the early 1700s, Peter the Great constructed a shipyard in Astrakhan and made the city his base of operations against Persia.
The city rebelled against the Tsar once again in 1705, when it was held by the Cossacks under Kondraty Bulavin.
Astrakhan was granted town status in 1717. In 1702, 1718 and 1767,the town suffered severely from fires and in 1719 was plundered by the Safavid Persians.. In 1830, cholera epidemic in the town killed much of the populace.
In March 1919 after a failed workers' revolt against Bolshevik rule, thousands of people were executed by the Cheka under orders from Sergey Kirov. During the Great Patriotic War, the Germans were within striking distance, but never captured the town…
