Some, like the four kilograms pygmy antelope, are the size of a rabbit, others, like the one tonne eland, are larger than a cow. Many are shy and solitary, others congregate in huge herds and migrate hundreds of miles in search of fresh grass. Amazingly, some even eat meat! An extraordinary diversity of antelopes live across the length and breadth of Africa, 74 species in all. Millions of years ago the spread of grassland brought profound changes to the lives of predator and prey throughout the continent. Many antelopes now grouped together and became fleet footed to escape hunting lions, cheetahs and hyenas.
