Collaboration, innovation and why we are pretty much alone: Pascal Lee at TEDxStavanger

Dr. Pascal Lee is a space scientist, explorer, and author. He is Co-Founder and Chairman of the Mars Institute, Senior Planetary Scientist at the SETI Institute, and Director of the NASA Haughton-Mars Project (HMP) at NASA Ames Research Center at Moffett Field, California, USA. He holds an ME in Geology and Geophysics from the University of Paris, and a PhD in Astronomy and Space Sciences from Cornell University.

Dr Lee's research focuses on asteroids and Mars. He has worked extensively in the Arctic and Antarctica viewed as planetary "analogs". In 1988, he wintered over in Antarctica for 402 days at Dumont d'Urville Station (France). In 1997, he initiated the Haughton-Mars Project (HMP), an international field research project focused on space science and exploration studies at the Haughton meteorite impact crater on Devon Island, High Arctic (Canada). He established the HMP Research Station there, now the largest privately operated polar research station in the world. Dr Lee has led or participated in over 30 expeditions in the Arctic and Antarctica. He proposed the Cold model of Mars surface evolution based on his fieldwork in Earth's polar regions. Dr Lee is a recipient of the United States Antarctic Service Medal and of several NASA Group Achievement Awards. He is as an advisor to NASA.

Pascal Lee is internationally recognized for his efforts to advance the human exploration of Mars. He has led the development of several space mission concepts to explore Mars and its moons, Phobos and Deimos. He was recently scientist-pilot in the first field test of NASA's new Space Exploration Vehicle, a concept spacecraft under development for future human exploration of the Moon, Near-Earth Asteroids, and Mars. He also led the Northwest Passage Drive Expedition, a record-setting Mars simulation rover trek on sea-ice along the fabled Northwest Passage in the Arctic.

Pascal Lee enjoys flying, painting, and writing. He is an FAA-certified helicopter commercial pilot and flight instructor, an artist-member of the International Association of Astronomical Artists, and the author of "Mission: Mars", an educational book on Mars exploration to be published internationally by Scholastic in September 2013. He lives in Santa Clara, California, where he is walked daily by his dogs.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
