Quick Facts:
• Debut Studio Album released in March 1967 by Verve Records.
• Rolling Stones #13 500 Greatest Albums of All-Time
• Upon release, it was largely unsuccessful and a financial failure.
Its controversial content led to its almost instantaneous ban from various record stores, many radio stations refused to play it, and magazines refused to carry advertisements for it.
Was recorded with Lou Reed, John Cale, Sterling Morrison and Maureen Tucker. At the instigation of their mentor and manager Andy Warhol, and his collaborator Paul Morrissey, German singer Nico was also featured.

1. Sunday Morning (Reed, John Cale) – released as single, was final song to be recorded. It was requested by Tom Wilson, who thought the album needed another song with lead vocals by Nico with the potential to be a successful single. Was written with Nico's voice in mind by Reed and Cale on a Sunday morning. But when it came time to record it, Reed sang the lead vocal and Nico was backing vocals.

2. I'm Waiting for the Man – Rolling Stone #159 on 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. About waiting on a streetcorner in Harlem, near the intersection of Lexington Avenue and 125th Street, in NYC and purchasing $26 worth of heroin, sung from the point of view of the purchaser, who has presumably traveled to Harlem from another part of the city; the "man" in the title is a drug dealer.

3. Femme Fatale – lead vocals by Nico. At the request of Warhol, Reed wrote the song about Warhol superstar Edie Sedgwick.

4. Venus in Furs – Lou vocal Inspired by the book of the same name, the song includes sexual themes of sadomasochism, bondage and submission. Arrangement features Cale's electric viola as well as Reed's ostrich guitar, which is a guitar with all of its strings tuned to the same note.

5. Run Run Run – Was written on the back of an envelope by Reed while he and the band were on their way to a gig. Song details a number of characters living in New York City, including Teenage Mary, Margarita Passion, Seasick Sarah, and Beardless Harry, all of whom are detailed using or seeking drugs.

6. All Tomorrow's Parties – Nico lead vocals.

7. Heroin – Written by Reed in 1964, the song, which overtly depicts heroin use and abuse, is one of the band's most celebrated compositions. Members of the band (Reed, in particular) frequently denied any claims that the song was advocating use of the drug.

8. There She Goes Again –About a prostitute.

9. I’ll Be Your Mirror – Lead vocals by Nico. Song is about the wish of a person that wants to share the beauty that a loved one possesses and the person sees, with the purpose that he/she appreciate themselves.

10. The Black Angel's Death Song (Reed, Cale) – Reed: "The idea here was to string words together for the sheer fun of their sound, not any particular meaning." Music is dominated by the piercing sound of Cale's electric viola, creating dissonance throughout the song.

11. European Son (Reed, Cale, Sterling Morrison, Maureen Tucker) – Is dedicated by the band to Delmore Schwartz, the poet who had been literary mentor of Reed at Syracuse University.
