E.T. Adventure Here Back Then Universal Studios Hollywood (2024)

For many people, The E.T. Adventure held a special place in their hearts. Kids (of all ages) loved the attraction. By the time it closed, it was showing signs of age and needed an update, but it had something many other attractions lacked – it had heart and a compelling story.

The story was simple – board a bike with E.T. in the basket and help him return to his home planet. The ride mirrored many iconic scenes from the movie, such as dodging police officers with flashlights, avoiding lurching cars, and eluding mysterious space-suited figures. A highlight was the soaring flight above the city and across the moon. Unlike the film, the ride took guests further, with the bike landing on E.T.'s planet, allowing riders to see his friends before returning to Earth.

The “heart” of the ride was demonstrated by a simple yet effective device: each visitor gave their first name to a crew member in the queue line. At the end of the ride, an E.T. figure would say “goodbye” to each visitor by name. This personal touch made a massive difference. Of course, it also allowed teens to have fun by making E.T. say mischievous things with creative name combinations.

All that remains of The E.T. Adventure at Universal Studios Hollywood is the old painted-out logo on the roof of the show building, now hosting The Revenge of the Mummy. The “E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial” logo was added to the roof during the 20th Anniversary celebration of the film in 2001 but was painted over in 2003 when the ride was removed.

The E.T. Adventure can still be experienced at Universal Orlando Resort in Florida.

Ride Systems
Although it looks like a soundstage, the building housing E.T. was explicitly built for the attraction. Previously, it served as an unloading and waiting area for trams while visitors were in the Special Effects Stages and a small prop warehouse.

The ride vehicles were nine-seater platforms suspended under a track that ran through the attraction. These platforms were modeled on bicycles, with an E.T. figure in the front basket. The E.T. figure reacted to the events of the ride—hiding when scared and disappearing from the basket at the end when he had returned to his home planet.

Many animatronic figures in the preshow area and throughout the attraction were built by Sally Corp in Florida.

Goodbye System
Birket Engineering developed the original concept for the E.T. goodbye system in collaboration with Universal Studios Florida project personnel, taking full responsibility for the design and implementation. Following the attraction's success, Universal Studios again contracted Birket to provide enhancements for the Hollywood and Osaka E.T. projects.

Upon entering the attraction, guests received a bar-coded passport containing their name. While boarding the ride vehicle, a host collected and scanned the passports. Birket’s system identified the vehicle as it departed by reading an RF tag mounted on top. This allowed the vehicle to "know" who was riding it. As guests approached the end of the ride, an animated E.T. would turn to greet the vehicle and address each guest by name.
