The Honest Merchant — An Islamic Moral Story on Honesty

In the heart of ancient Arabia, there lived a merchant named Salim, widely respected for his honesty and upright character. One day in the market, Salim discovered a leather pouch filled with gold coins. Though he was experiencing financial hardship himself, he chose not to keep it.

Instead, Salim stood in the market and publicly announced the lost item, asking if anyone had lost a pouch of coins. The next day, a poor man came forward claiming the pouch. Cautiously, Salim asked for a description. The man accurately described the pouch and stated the exact number of coins it contained.

Without hesitation, Salim returned the pouch.

People around him asked, “Why didn’t you keep it, especially when you need it so badly?”

Salim smiled and replied,
“The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us: ‘Whoever deceives is not of us.’” (Sahih Muslim)
