Biden slammed for having 'double standards' on Cuba

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has castigated the White House’s immigration policy, accusing the Biden administration of having double standards when it comes to the plight of Cuban refugees and migrants.

"They have a hundred-times stronger case for political persecution leaving a communist dictatorship than the other migrants who are coming across the border who are basically coming across the border because they want more economic opportunity," Governor DeSantis said during an event at the weekend.

"It’s a double standard, but honestly, it’s something we expected because I do think a lot of their border policies are very political in nature in its intent.”

Thousands of protesters have taken to the streets in Cuba as part of some of the biggest displays of anti-government sentiment seen in recent years and come as the country faces a surge in coronavirus cases and an economic crisis.

Authorities have appeared determined to put a stop to the demonstrations. More than a 100 protesters were detained, including a leading Cuban dissident who was arrested trying to attend a march in the city of Santiago.

Cuba’s economy contracted over 10 per cent in 2020, and continues to slide in 2021.

This has led to widespread shortages of basic goods, with the economic crisis exacerbated by a surge in COVID cases.

In response, many protesters have called on the communist regime to allow them greater political freedom, a request that has been denied.

In a speech last week, President Joe Biden called Cuba a “failed state” and communism “a failed system” but did not commit to tangibly helping the protesters.
