Probably the best-loved detective film ever made, and certainly one of the most popular, THE THIN MAN teamed William Powell and Myrna Loy, who had first displayed their on-screen chemistry the year before in MANHATTAN MELODRAMA. Nick Charles (Powell) is a retired detective who has married wealthy Nora Charles (Loy) and now intends to devote himself to looking after her business interests and doing some serious drinking. While they're in New York for the holidays, Dorothy Wynant (Maureen O'Sullivan) asks Powell to help her find her missing father, Clyde Wynant (Edward Ellis), an inventor who some months before told Dorothy that he was going into seclusion to work on a new project, but that he would return in time to attend her wedding. The event is drawing near and she has had no word from him. Nick is not anxious to end his happy retirement, but Nora, eager for excitement, prods him into it. Before long, Nick is on the case, with Nora and their dog Astra in tow.
