There are countless systemic diseases that manifest in the mouth. In this video, Dr Joseph Nemeth touches on 5 common diseases that may show early signs in your oral cavity.

Leukemia may show early signs in the mouth and the gums may be inflamed or swollen. Since swollen gums are relatively common, you most likely do not have Leukemia if you have gum inflammation. However, your dentist may be able to proactively spot irregularities in your mouth and prompt further investigation. Leukemia has many other signs and symptoms as well, but one of the early signs of Leukemia is swollen or enlarged gum tissue.

Anemia may also show signs in the mouth. Very often, signs of Anemia may include pale or thin gum tissue because they aren't getting enough blood supply.

If we see a patient who has very advanced gum disease, we will often suspect Diabetes and the patient may not even know it! Diabetes and gum disease are very closely related. If one has Diabetes, you are much more likely to have severe gum disease. Also, severe gum disease is one of the factors that may cause or contribute to Diabetes. Signs of Diabetes may manifest in the mouth via swollen or bleeding gums which is a strong indicator of gum disease or periodontal disease. Your oral health and diabetes are very strongly connected, and may of the Diabetes symptoms may be worsened by an unhealthy mouth.

Of course, we see signs of oral cancer in the mouth. Oral cancer may manifest in many different forms and often times your dentist may be the first person to notice any strange lesions tumors. Oral cancer symptoms may manifest in the mouth and negatively affect the rest of your body.

Also, one of the primary signs of Bulimia is weak thin enamel. Bulimic patients may purge. When they purge the stomach acid enters their mouth and can cause burns on the tissue, erosion of the gums and thin or chipped enamel.

There are a number of other systemic diseases that may manifest in the mouth. Of course, if your mouth isn't healthy it will contribute to other diseases throughout your body. I can think of almost no systemic diseases that isn't linked to or made worse by an unhealthy mouth.
