Entrepreneur to Leader | 60 Second Business
Starting a business and running a growing one are two very different jobs. The entrepreneur who founded a company is rarely the same leader who takes it to scale — and the transition is one of the hardest in business. For any business, the entrepreneur-to-leader transition is the moment when a start-up either becomes a proper business — or stalls.
In the early days, the entrepreneur does everything. Ideas, selling, hiring, finance, operations — all personal. Decisions are fast, instinctive, and driven by the founder's vision. Success depends on speed, hustle and personal energy.
As the business grows, this approach breaks down. One person can't sign every cheque or approve every hire in a 200-person company. The founder must shift from doing the work to leading others who do the work — a shift from player to coach.
The main difficulties of the transition are these:
Letting go of direct control.
Delegating to new managers.
Building systems and processes rather than relying on personal memory.
Recruiting leaders who may know more than the founder about their function.
And taking time to set strategy rather than fighting day-to-day fires.
Many founders can't make this shift. Some hire a professional CEO and step back. Some adapt and grow into the role. Others hold on too tightly — and cap the business's growth.
