How To Move Off Quickly In A Manual Car. This moving off driving lesson teaches you how to move off faster in a manual car before I demonstrate it on several busy junctions in rush hour in Birmingham. Learn how to move off quickly without stalling for times when you are moving off at traffic lights, large roundabouts or any other situation where you need to move off quickly in a car.

Moving off in a car is often taught incorrectly and also often misunderstood by pupils when it is being taught correctly. Many instructors teach you to lift the clutch alone without any gas and this is totally wrong. That will work in a diesel car but moving off in a petrol car is different. Even in a diesel you'll move away slowly just using the clutch.

Many learners get used to lifting the clutch alone even when they've been taught not to. Even though I teach this skill it's something I have to constantly remind pupils about. Moving off using the clutch then gas is an easy bad habit to fall into.

I demonstrate in this video that if you lift only the clutch, the car revs and does the gas for you. Not all cars do that and even so it is only supplying the minimum amount of gas to get moving but not enough to be moving off fast.

The fact that the car revs when you lift the clutch proves it should be gas THEN clutch - the car is doing the gas for you to avoid stalling!

Gas then clutch is written in official publications such as the DVSA driving test examiners guide "Essential Skills" and even the manufacturers manual for my vehicle. Many drivers were taught this wrong and simply refuse to accept they've been driving incorrectly for years.

As with all my videos, take great care when practicing what I show here. I recommend doing this somewhere very quiet with nobody else around and with an experienced driver there to help you. Do not just go out and start trying to move off quickly in heavy traffic on your own. It takes a lot of time, skill and practice to be able to move off quickly and even the most experienced drivers can get it wrong.
