ROUTE 66 Road Trip - ILLINOIS - St Louis to Chicago
Our Route 66 journey continues as we cross into Illinois, starting with a walk across the historic Chain of Rocks Bridge, famous for its unique 22-degree bend over the Mississippi River. From there, we hit some classic Route 66 stops, including the Catsup Bottle in Collinsville, the West End Service Station, and the quirky Pink Elephant Antiques in Livingston, home to a Muffler Man, vintage statues, and more roadside oddities.
Next, we visit Henry’s Rabbit Ranch, a tribute to both VW Rabbits and real bunnies, and the Soulsby Service Station, one of the best-preserved 1920s gas stations on Route 66. We also check out the Turkey Tracks, a natural rock formation with fossilized footprints, and take a scenic drive along one of the original paved sections of Route 66.
In Springfield, we stop at the famous Cozy Dog Drive-In, home of the original corn dog on a stick, and see the Lauterbach Muffler Man, a giant fiberglass statue that has become a beloved roadside landmark. We also explore the Route 66 Experience at the Illinois State Fairgrounds, featuring historical displays and a stunning neon light show at sunset.
Continuing north, we visit Atlanta, home to the American Giants Museum, dedicated to preserving and restoring Muffler Men statues. In Dwight, we check out the historic Texaco Station, the Two-Cell Jail, and the Coca-Cola House before heading to Chicago, where we celebrate the completion of our Route 66 adventure at the "End of the Road" sign.
We wrap up our journey with a visit to Wrigley Field for a Chicago Cubs game, soaking in the incredible atmosphere before saying goodbye to the Mother Road—for now!
