Back in 1971, iconic singer Rod Stewart made it to the headlines with one of his greatest solo hit numbers of all time - "Maggie May". This one secured the No.1 position on the U.S Hot 100 later in October of the same year. It was there on the top for five whole weeks. Most of Rod Stewart's fans regard Maggie May to be the singer's signature song that is still played at his concerts to this day. "Maggie May" expresses the contradictory emotions and ambivalence of a teenager involved in an unconventional relationship with an older woman, and written from Stewart's real-life experience.

Stewart openly recalls in several interviews that Maggie May was almost a true tale about the first lady he had sex with at the Beaulieu Jazz Festival in 1961. The only bit that was fictitious is the name of the woman. In reality, her name was not Maggie May. Rod Stewart stated that the name was taken from an old Liverpudlian song on a prostitute. There is another version of the song released by The Faces when both the songwriters' Rod Stewart and Ronald David Wood, nicknamed Ronnie Wood, were in the band. Per Billboard, "Maggie May" was the No.2 song in 1971. Some other details vary slightly from Rod's real life: he met the older woman in July and not in September. And he had left school when he was15, whereas "Maggie May" is from the perspective of a boy who was contemplating to return as a student. All that said, let's find out the real story behind Stewart's exemplary "Maggie May".
