Huntly section pre-opening flyover – February 2020

Huntly section of the Waikato Expressway will open to traffic within the next month, ahead of schedule. Some minor finishing works including asphalting, central and side safety barriers are still to be completed.

The Huntly section involves 15km of four lane expressway, 4 million m3 of earthworks, an 80m cut through the Taupiri Range, over 100ha of forest, bush and wetland enhancement and permanent protection of a sacred lagoon and two pā.

This construction project will connect the already completed Ōhinewai section of the expressway to the Ngāruawāhia section, which opened in late 2013; and reduce traffic congestion and improve safety within the Huntly and Taupiri townships by significantly reducing through traffic.
