A Cemetery Walk with Thomas Pollard // Lincoln and Woodstock, NH
Meet Thomas Pollard: One of Lincoln’s Earliest Settlers and a Founder of the Community We Know Today
Step back in time with us as we explore the remarkable story of Thomas Pollard, who arrived in Lincoln, New Hampshire, in 1841 with his bride, Mary Ann, after walking on foot from Nashua, New Hampshire. What they believed would be a new home turned out to be little more than a drafty shack—but their determination, grit, and resourcefulness helped shape the earliest days of Lincoln’s history.
In this engaging recollection, Tom Pollard’s descendant shares vivid family stories:
• How Thomas and Mary Ann survived their first isolated year in town
• The growth of the Pollard family—spanning generations, marriages, and deep local roots
• Thomas’s work peddling jackknives, handkerchiefs, spruce gum, and Farmer’s Almanacs across the region
• The development of their farm (the site of today’s Common Man restaurant) and its role as one of Lincoln’s earliest guest houses
• Guiding early sportsmen to Loon Pond and up Loon Mountain long before the area became a ski destination
• The origins of Pollard Brook, Pollard Road, and their connections to the family
• How the Pollards interacted—sometimes contentiously—with neighboring families like the Henrys
• Insights into early Lincoln’s churches, industries, immigration, and family interconnections
This video is a heartfelt window into Lincoln’s formative years—told through the stories of one of its founding families, whose legacy continues through generations still living here today.
