Breast Biopsies May Carry Hidden Risks

When you insert a needle into a cancerous lesion, cells can spread. That is basic biology.

A study comparing women with highly suspicious breast lesions found a significant increase in metastatic disease in the group that had a needle biopsy first, compared to those who went directly to lumpectomy. Nobody ran those studies before making biopsies standard practice.

Asserting your autonomy in this situation is rational. The absolute reassurance everyone is chasing does not exist anywhere in medicine.
