Muscle Cars 1964
This is part one of my series on the 60's muscle cars. In this part we get a few basics knocked out, like the definition of "muscle car" as it applies to this video, and explanations of horsepower and rear axle ratios. We will cover some basic information on the 1964 GTO, Olds 442 and Chevelle Malibu SS with the 327. I'll also touch on some other cars from this year that had good performance, especially the Mopars with the 426 wedge. This video is light on tech, I'll go deeper in the next video when we have more muscle cars to compare.
One note/correction. A few people have pointed out that the Buick 300 was not a "nailhead". It seems that most of the few people familiar with these engines only consider the 264, 322, 364, 401, and 425 as "nailheads". That's fair enough as all of those engines are from the same family, so it makes sense to group them together. The 300 is from a different family, and with different architecture. However, it's valves are still small, and nearly vertical which is where the term "nailhead" comes from. It's not an official term anyway, it's certainly not in any Buick literature. So, who's to say that the 300 isn't a nailhead? In any case, I understand that most people don't consider the 300 a nailhead, even though it does fit the basic description of one. So in the future, I'll try to refrain from using automotive slang and just stick with the official terms.
