I'm The Only Rich Kid At School | i hate my life

“Every challenge you face today makes you stronger tomorrow.” said my dad while I tried to convince him to change my school. He thought he was wiser than the greatest Chinese philosophers and quite frankly it made me sick. We are wealthy but I don’t get to reap many rewards of that wealth. My parents grew up in poverty and worked their way up. Today my dad is a well renowned architect and my mom is the CEO of a major tech company. They attributed their success to the determination that came from wanting to escape a life of poverty and struggles. Unfortunately, they believed that I should struggle too as it would help me to build character and strength – so, since kindergarten, they decided to send me to the worst possible schools imaginable. “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger!” my dad would always say – feeling like the wisest man who ever lived.

I’m sixteen now, but at middle school, I had a horrible life. We lived in a wealthy neighborhood with amazing schools. I know this because we’d drive past them every day. I also spoke to the neighborhood kids and they always had wonderful stories about what they’d been up to at school or about some amazing field trip they had been on. I’d never been on a field trip because the kids at my school were too poor to afford them. My school was old, run down and just sad overall. It didn’t help that my parents drove me there in their expensive cars while everyone stared. I had the best clothes, shoes, supplies and I guess people became jealous of me pretty easily – even the teachers. Everyone referred to me as the ‘rich kid’. They never even bothered to learn my name. Those who did talk to me only wanted to be my friends because they expected me to give them money. When they learnt that my parents didn’t send me to school with any, they quickly disappeared. I spent my life being bullied for something that was beyond my control.

When it was time for high school, I begged my parents to send me to one of the schools in our neighborhood. I mean, if middle school sucked so badly, couldn’t I at least enjoy my high school life?

They shot down my idea very quickly.

“We’ve decided to send you to Milestone High School. It’s quite far from here but you can use the time spent on your journeys there to reflect on your privilege.” said my mom.

“What privilege? I don’t enjoy any perks of being rich! You two are awful!” I replied.

“You’re not rich. We are.” they laughed.
