To qualify for Federal Disability Retirement, you must be a career FERS or CSRS employee with a minimum of 18 months of creditable service. You must also have a medical condition that prevents you from fulling at least one of the duties of your position, and that medical condition is expected to persist for a minimum of 1 year.

This medical condition does not have to be related to an on-the-job injury. It could be a preexisting condition that has worsened during your career and is impacting your ability to perform your job.

You must also be able to prove that your agency is not able to reasonable accommodate you or give you a valid reassignment that meets all OPM’s criteria.
