The cost of entry is a high - $500 for a printer that is functionally identical to a $79 cartridge based model. But unlike that version, which may only get 200-300 pages on the starter ink cartridges, the Eco Tank version will likely print thousands of pages before another set of bottles needs to be purchased. Additionally the bottles cost about $50-$60 for a set which are good for another several thousand pages of printing.
Ink is loaded by pouring the ink from a bottle into the tank on the printer. This can be a messy process as there are few safeguards to avoid spilling. Additionally it's possible to accidentally pour ink into the wrong tank. I would agree with Epson's guidance and wear disposable gloves when pouring in the ink.
Printing performance is excellent with fast black and white as well as color speeds. Even in its fastest mode the print quality is excellent and sharp. The printer can print on both sides of the paper automatically, although its auto document feeder for scanning and copies will not automatically scan two sides.
The bottom line? The cost of entry is higher but the overall cost of ownership, for those with moderate print volume, should be much less than current models. I do wish the printer was slightly less expensive and I hope future versions will have a less messy way of replenishing the ink supply.
