Trump Exempts Smartphones, Chips From Tariffs; China Suspends Exports Of Rare Earth Minerals

President Donald Trump has temporarily excluded smartphones, laptops, and other electronics from new tariffs, offering relief to tech companies like Apple and Samsung.

However, he plans to introduce separate tariffs on imported semiconductors over the next few weeks.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick indicated that additional duties on critical technology products from China could be implemented within the next two months.

These developments have contributed to significant market volatility, with the S&P 500 index down over 10% since Trump's inauguration.

China has called Trump's exemptions a small step to correct the wrongs it had sent in motion. Beijing has also suspended the exports of some rare earth minerals which could have long term impact on everything from defence to energy.
