Are You A Light? - John 1:1-5 || Devotionals
We're continuing our study of John 1, as we dive into some deep study of who God is: the Word, God, the Life, and the Light of Men. If Christ lives in us, then we should be radiating His light to others.
In this episode, we explore some Hebrew and Greek words for God and learn how John redefines who God is to a culture that has no frame of reference for who He is. John links both the Old and New Testament together by using the phrase "In the beginning", referencing Gen. 1:1. In that passage, we learn that God is the Hebrew term "Elohim" which means all-powerful one, mighty one, supreme being. The entire Bible begins with showing God's power.
But John opens his gospel with a different definition of God. He uses the Word or in Greek "Logos". This means expression, word, thought. This was with God and was God. In Greek, the word God is "Theos" which is about as close as one can get to Elohim translating from Hebrew to Greek.
In 1 John, we learn about the trinity: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit. Essentially, John is linking The Word being with God and is God.
Through this link, we can see that John is redefining God to the Ephesians. God is not only the God of power (Gen. 1:1) but also a God of expression/thought, through The Word (Jesus).
