Opal 1988-03-26, Slego, Rimini, Italy. As "Opal" in 1988 this band was Mazzy Star the year before they changed their name from Opal.This is the entire Italy concert video of 94 minutes & 17 songs.

Aside from the name,the 1988 Opal band (post Kendra Smith, the singer who left late '87 or early '88) is the same band as Mazzy Star except they're a 5-piece band here.As Mazzy Star they often toured as a 6-piece.They changed their name in '89.At this '88 Opal show the band plays 4 songs they later played live at many '90s Mazzy Star shows (Ghost Highway, Blue Flower, Rock Section, & Where Did You Run To. Ghost HIghway & Blue Flower were included on Mazzy Star albums)

Lineup:
Hope Sandoval,David Roback,Suki Ewers,Keith Mitchell,& Will Cooper (a.k.a. Will Glenn,his real name).All these Opal personnel have also been original, long-time members of Mazzy Star,&remain so to this day except Will who passed away in 2001 from cancer.The other 4 all played the 2012 & 2013 Mazzy Star tours.

Other differences noticeable in comparing Hope-era Opal in 1988 to Mazzy Star: In Opal, Hope still sang a lot of Opal songs co-written by Kendra Smith&David Roback dating from the time Kendra was singer.But as Mazzy Star the band played a lot more new songs co-written by Hope&David, while Kendra-penned songs got dropped from the repertoire.1988-Opal was a louder, heavier,more "psychedelic" sounding band than Mazzy Star would be.Mazzy Star's generally quieter sound hearkened back to Opal's earlier,mid-'80s pre-Happy Nightmare Baby sound (see albums "Opal - Early Recordings Vols.1&2").Also,the band played more cover songs at Opal shows than at Mazzy Star ones.Opal plays at least 6 covers of other artists' songs at this Italy concert.Mazzy Star never played quite as many covers.And,as one can see here,in Opal Hope was more animated,moving onstage more than she would do later with Mazzy Star when she preferred a restrained stage presence where she barely moved.But arguably,Hope's reserved presence is more riveting than most prancing dancing singers 'cause she's got the most important element - singing - down better than most other vocalists.Also, few people are as photogenic or have faces as interesting as Hope's. Many eyes&cameras can't help but be smitten by Hope's face & form.But that was true both before & after the band's name change! Hope's singing style did change with time.She was belting it out &singing "rougher" in Opal,as you can hear here,&also in the early years of Mazzy Star,than she did later as the '90s progressed.In Mazzy Star she developed a style that,over time,expressed more &more nuance&subtlety in her singing.There's a difference in Hope's singing style one can easily hear when considering the early era as perhaps consisting of the time of the 1st Mazzy Star album&Hope's live '88 Opal, & '90 Mazzy shows -- & comparing that early time to the later period of the 2nd&3rd Mazzy Star albums,&live shows from '93 onward.It's interesting hearing&seeing Hope singing here in her early style of '88 as she sounds quite different from her later style one hears in recordings through most of the '90s,&in 2011-12.(It seems my little "editorial" here has gotten nearly as long as the Opal show upload!)
