America's MOST Disrespected NATIVE Wildflower: Fleabane!
Most people see fleabane and think one thing: weed.
But what if this common backyard plant is actually one of the most important native species growing right under your feet?
In this episode of Nature At Your Door, Frank Taylor takes a closer look at fleabane (Erigeron spp.), a misunderstood native wildflower found across North America. Often mistaken for an invasive weed like goldenrod, fleabane is actually a vital pioneer species that helps restore disturbed ecosystems and supports a wide range of pollinators.
Growing right along a backyard garden edge, this plant reveals an incredible story:
• Why fleabane is NOT invasive
• How it thrives in tough conditions
• Its role as an early successional (pioneer) species
• The insects and pollinators that depend on it
• Its surprising connection to the Lynx Flower Moth
• And the fascinating folklore behind its name — “fleabane”
With delicate daisy-like flowers made up of dozens of tiny florets, fleabane is more than just a roadside plant — it’s a hidden ecological powerhouse.
So before you pull it out of your yard… take a closer look.
Because sometimes the plants we ignore the most are doing the most important work.
