STORYLINE:
Britain's Queen Mother was back performing one of her traditional duties on Thursday when she opened a memorial to Britain's war dead.
The elderly royal, who missed the ceremony last year because of a broken collarbone, opened the Field of Remembrance in the grounds of Westminster Abbey.
The rows of wooden crosses, Stars of David and Muslim Crescents, bearing scarlet poppies, honour those who died serving their country.
The 101-year-old mother of Queen Elizabeth the Second walked unaided, except for two walking sticks, and spent more than an hour paying tribute to those who died, despite the perishing cold.
She herself lost a brother in the First World War.
This year, almost double the usual number of crosses were placed in the field - 15-thousand altogether.
And for the first time, victims of a civilian tragedy were also remembered.
The American section was filled with crosses laid in memory of those killed in the terrorist attacks of September 11.
After the ceremony, and accompanied by her cousin, the Duke of Kent, the Queen Mother attended a short, open-air service of remembrance and met war veterans.
She also toured the field in her specially adapted golf cart, stopping to view tributes placed there.
