As administration eyes more AEA deportation flights, judge says he lacks authority to block them

The Trump administration is intensifying deportation efforts under the 1798 Alien Enemies Act (AEA), targeting Venezuelan migrants alleged to have gang affiliations. Despite legal challenges, a federal judge has stated he lacks the authority to block these deportations.
On April 18, U.S. District Judge James Boasberg declined to issue an order halting imminent deportations, citing the Supreme Court's prior decision that limited his jurisdiction. This decision comes amid reports that the administration is preparing to deport detainees from the Bluebonnet Detention Center in Texas to El Salvador, where they may be held in facilities like the CECOT prison .
The ACLU has filed emergency motions to delay these removals, arguing that the administration is not providing adequate notice or legal recourse to the affected individuals. Concerns have been raised about due process violations, especially as some deportees are being sent to third countries due to Venezuela's refusal to accept them .
This situation underscores the ongoing legal and ethical debates surrounding the use of the AEA for immigration enforcement and the balance between national security and individual rights.
