Enhanced Biological Phosphorous Removal: Wastewater Treatment
Phosphorus released into the environment causes the serious degradation of water quality from eutrophication. In this video, the issues surrounding phosphorus runoffs are discussed, and the biological phosphorus removal technique called Enhanced Biological Phosphorus Removal (EBPR) is explored. EPBR uses bacteria to store and remove phosphorus from wastewater by storing it in their cells. This is done by first holding them in an anaerobic environment and then transferring them to an aerobic environment where they can multiply quickly. EBPR is a great alternative to the chemical method of phosphorus removal and is nowadays widely used in many industries and municipalities.
