Building the UI for a Space Simulation Game | Orbital Drift DevNews #2
In this DevNews we take a closer look at the UI architecture behind Orbital Drift and how we’re building an interface for a game driven by complex simulation systems.
Orbital Drift is a game about orbital mechanics, resource management and surviving in space. As development progresses, the number of gameplay systems keeps growing – orbital transfers, docking, crafting, inventory, ship systems, time control and more.
To keep the interface scalable, we designed the UI around an MVVM architecture inside Unreal Engine. Instead of building panels one by one, we created a system that allows us to assemble UI elements from reusable components.
In this episode we talk about:
– how gameplay systems communicate with the UI
– why separating simulation from interface matters
– how resources, crafting and ship systems feed data into the UI
– and how this approach allows us to build new features faster as the game grows
This is an early look at the systems powering the interface of Orbital Drift during development.
If you're interested in space simulation, game development, or Unreal Engine architecture, this series will show how the game evolves over time.
Orbital Drift is currently in Pre-Alpha development.
