Important lathe safety:
I DON'T RECOMMEND THAT ANYONE SHOULD WEAR GLOVES WHILE USING THE LATHE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE.
IT IS VERY DANGEROUS if you aren't 100% positive you know the type of work that can and cannot be performed with gloves on, and you have to know EXACTLY where you can and cannot touch your gloves. Put a glove in the wrong spot, the lathe (or a stringer of metal) can snag anywhere on the glove and pull your hand inward, causing a serious injury.
I know it's taught as "forbidden" to ever use gloves on a lathe, but I typically do when sanding and finishing parts in this manner. I don't recommend you do it, but I do it, so expect to see it in several of my videos. Aluminum edges are sharp, and all metal gets hot when sanding. I can get the job done quicker, and with less small accidental cuts, and clean hands.

There are LOTS of situations on a lathe where I would never wear gloves, but this is not one of them. Always work within your own personal safety limits.

I made this part for a friend that lives in the desert, where it's windy most days. It's an outdoor ashtray (windproof). I saw he had a small square porcelain one sitting on his outdoor table. That's where I got the idea for this video.
