Liebherr - Big cranes for the Big Apple

In August 2022, three large ship to shore container cranes manufactured in county Kerry completed their journey from their assembly site in Cobh, Ireland, to the Port of New York and New Jersey, in the United States. The ship-to-shore container cranes, which have a height of 133m at their tallest, have now entered service at Maher terminals LLC.

Their journey began at our production plant in Killarney, Ireland. Following design and manufacture, the crane components were transported by road to the Port of Fenit, and onwards by sea to Cobh in Cork Harbour. Here they were partly assembled, in advance of their voyage across the Atlantic on board the specialist heavy lift vessel, the Biglift Baffin. Following arrival in the USA the vessel dropped anchor whilst preparations for crossing under both the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge and the Bayonne Bridge in New York City were made.

The booms on the cranes were lowered, and the vessel ballast tanks were filled to lower the vessel position in the water, further reducing the height of the cranes above sea level. In order to safely pass under the bridges, tidal conditions had to be optimum and at the next low tide, the vessel raised anchor and made good progress, passing under the taller Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, before making its way toward the Bayonne Bridge, with the vessel and cranes safely navigating under the bridge with just 40 cm to spare.

The vessel docked at Maher terminals shortly afterwards, where the STS cranes were unloaded and fully assembled before entering service several weeks later.
