In Milwaukee on October 19th 1912 Theodore Roosevelt stepped from his hotel into a crowd unaware that John Schrank had been waiting with a gun. The bullet tore through Roosevelt's chest — slowed only by the folded 50 page manuscript of his speech and a steel glasses case in his breast pocket. Only after collapsing backstage did surgeons extract the bullet which would remain lodged near his ribs for life. Had that paper-thin barrier failed Roosevelt's death could have unified the fractured Republican Party altering the 1912 election and the entire trajectory of the progressive movement in America.
