In today's episode of India Global, A massive marine heatwave swept across Southeast Asia and the Pacific in 2024, covering 40 million square kilometers of ocean—five times Australia’s size—according to a World Meteorological Organization report. WMO scientists attribute the extreme ocean temperatures to the climate crisis, coinciding with devastating weather events like deadly landslides in the Philippines, severe flooding in Australia, and rapid glacier loss in Indonesia. The region was nearly half a degree Celsius hotter than the 1991–2020 average, with sea levels rising almost 4mm per year, significantly higher than the global average of 3.5mm. WMO Secretary-General Professor Celeste Saulo warned that ocean heat and acidification are causing lasting damage to marine ecosystems and the economies that rely on them.
