The Pajero came into production in 1982 with what’s now known as the Generation 1 Pajero. It was designed to compete in the growing 4x4 market and featured independent front suspension, a solid rear axle and a fairly advanced selectable 4x4 system. In its first year of production, it was only offered in a 2 door and in the following years, became available in 4 doors and various trim levels from rugged utilitarian vehicle, to wannabe Lexus spec and had a bunch of engine options the best of which being a petrol 3L V6. The year following its launch, the Gen 1 Pajero was entered into the Dakar rally and finished in 3rd place, then won the for the first time in 1985, which was the start of the Pajero’s long history of success in the Dakar.

In the 90’s, the Pajero continued its dominance in the Dakar winning in 92 and 93 in the T2 production vehicle class of the race. But Mitsubishi wasn’t satisfied with just winning most of the Dakar races. They wanted to completely dominate. So, in the mid-90s they decided to exploit a section in the FIA T2 rules which defines a “production car” as a vehicle that had at least 2500 road legal homologated units produced.

What did Mitsubishi do? They made 2500 road legal homologated Dakar rally ready race cars, slapped an Evo badge on it and entered in it in the Dakar rally hoping that the sales generated from the publicity of dominating the Dakar would offset the cost of developing such an insane vehicle in such low numbers.

This is what’s called making a “homologation special”.

The Pajero Evolution got:
- A stiffened chassis
- All Road Multilink Independent suspension for Evolution (ARMIE)
- The suspension arms were made longer, making the Evo's track 1.59m, which is 12.5cm wider than the standard Pajero.
- 6G74 MIVEC engine "276"hp
- Intelligent Vehicle Electronic Control System, aka INVECS II sports automatic gear box
- Limited Slip Rear Diff!
- Aluminium Bonnet
And much more! It's all in the video.
