Soleil Royal: The Mind-Blowing Story Behind History's Most Famous Ship Model

What is the greatest ship model ever made? For many historians and master builders, the answer is unanimous: the legendary Soleil Royal model displayed at the Musée national de la Marine.

Built in 1839 by master craftsman Jean-Baptiste Tanneron, this 1/40th scale masterpiece is a stunning reconstruction of King Louis XIV’s flagship, a vessel that was quite literally "Versailles at sea." But there’s a catch: Tanneron built it more than a century after the real ship had already vanished in flames.

In this video, we dive into the incredible history of the real Soleil Royal (the ultimate 17th-century political weapon), the artistic detective work required to rebuild it from ghosts, and how this single model became the blueprint for how the world imagines the Sun King's navy today.

We also look at how YOU can build this legendary warship yourself, from beginner-friendly plastic kits to advanced wooden replicas from brands like OcCre, Artesanía Latina, and Heller.
