London Beer Flood Monday 17th October 1814.

As the Napoleonic Wars neared their end, London was shocked by one of the most bizarre tragedies to befall this great city - when a 15 feet tsunami of beer swept through the streets of London, killing 8 people.

This is the story of the Great London Beer Flood of 1814.

And apart from being a weird history story, I wanted to share this with you because, having just done a couple of videos about the War of 1812 between Britain & America I wanted to paint a picture of the social conditions that drove working class men to join the British army during the Napoleonic Wars.

On the afternoon of the 17th October 1814, a huge 22 foot barrel of fermenting Porter Beer exploded in the Horse Shoe Brewery on the junction of Tottenham Court Road and Great Russel Street.

320,000 gallons of porter beer (that’s about two and a half millions pints) poured out of the brewery in a 15 foot tidal wave, swamping the nearby slum of St. Giles Rookery.

8 people were drowned in this sad tragedy.

My name is Chris Green ("The History Chap") and I am on a mission to share the amazing history of Britain so that we can appreciate where we have come from and why we are here.

History should not be stuffy or a long list of dates or kings & queens.
So rather than lectures or Youtube animations, I tell stories that bring the past to life.

My aim is to be chat as if I were having a coffee or meal with you. Jean in Maryland, USA recently wrote: "Chris, is the history teacher I wish I had at school!"

Just for the record, I do have a history degree and continue to have a passion for the subject I studied.
