Mount Kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain on the African continent and the highest free-standing mountain in the world.

Kilimanjaro has three volcanic cones: Mawenzi, Shira and Kibo. Mawenzi and Shira are extinct but Kibo, the highest peak, is dormant and could erupt again.

One third of those attempting to climb Kilimanjaro are unsuccessful due to altitude-related problems. Almost every major mountain holds a certain risk associated with climbing it, and Mount Kilimanjaro is no different. According to recent statistics, the mountain is the site of approximately ten fatalities every year.
