Goitre is an abnormal enlargement of the thyroid gland, which is located in the front of the neck. It is commonly caused by iodine deficiency, but may also result from thyroid disorders such as hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, or thyroid nodules. Symptoms can include swelling in the neck, difficulty swallowing, coughing, and sometimes changes in voice. In many cases, small goitres may not cause symptoms. Treatment depends on the underlying cause and may involve iodine supplementation, medications, or surgery
