‘Backwards step’: Inquiry into Indigenous child abuse voted down

Herald Sun senior writer and columnist Patrick Carlyon says there has been a “terribly backwards step” after Jacinta Price’s motion for a royal commission into Indigenous child sexual abuse was voted down.

Mr Carlyon said the Yes campaign’s rhetoric is known for discussing “truth telling”.

“How could you better tell the truth than to have a royal commission into a very serious problem in Indigenous communities,” he told Sky News host Peta Credlin.

“You’ve got to get into this ‘truth telling’ – you’ve got to explore the problems and understand the problems.”

Mr Carlyon said Shadow Indigenous Affairs Minister Jacinta Price is simply trying to create a “better future” for Indigenous Australians.
