Sealand
Forgotten by a country, adopted by an individual and converted into a de facto country – that’s the story of the formation of the smallest nation in the world. Principality of Sealand, which though doesn’t look like a nation, is technically the smallest country in the world.

At first glance, the position of the country looks extremely comic. On top of two pillars which act as a supporting system in the mid-sea, the country is a rectangular piece of land constructed on top of these two pillars.

Sealand issued its own currency and postage stamps for a time, and now makes money from selling titles of nobility as well offering knighthoods. Sealand made news in 2000 when they attempted to run a data-hosting company called HavenCo. Essentially it was meant to be an off-shore data storage area where companies or individuals could store and serve data to jurisdictions that prohibited it, but the company never reached its intended purpose.
Bajau People
The Bajau people have long lived on the waters of Southeast Asia, where they've evolved into sea-dwelling beings with bodies like no other humans on planet Earth.

They live on the waters of Southeast Asia, dwelling in boats and living off the sea with hardly even a homeland that they call their own. They have little sense of time and age — hardly any clocks, calendars, birthdays, and the like for them. And they’ve even evolved for life on the sea, with internal organs and body capabilities unlike our own.

Astonishingly, these deep dives are performed only with a wooden mask or goggles and a weight belt. Dr Ilardo explained that the spleen was an obvious candidate for studying potential adaptations to this aquatic lifestyle.

Oymyakon
The coldest temperatures in the northern hemisphere have been recorded in Sakha, the location of the Oymyakon valley.
In the Even language spoken in Siberia, Oymyakon means "unfrozen water."
It takes two days of driving down a barren road to get there.
Oymyakon, Russia, is the coldest inhabited town on Earth.
People live in the valley despite the harsh climate.

Tristan Da Cunha
The six-by-six-mile volcanic island of Tristan da Cunha (the main island of an archipelago bearing the same name) sits in the remote waters of the South Atlantic, roughly equidistant from South Africa and Brazil, and about 1,500 miles from its nearest neighbor, the island of St. Helena. Lacking an airport, Tristan, part of a British Overseas Territory, can only be reached by ship — a journey that lasts about a week.

Tristan, as it’s colloquially known, is currently home to about 250 British nationals, whose diverse ancestry — made up of Scottish soldiers, Dutch seamen, Italian castaways and an American whaler — first arrived some 200 years ago. They live in “the world’s most isolated settlement of Edinburgh of the Seven Seas,” reads the island’s website, “far from the madding crowd.”

Mount Fanjing
Two ancient Buddhist temples crown this dramatic rocky pinnacle.
Located in the eastern Guizhou province of China, Fanjingshan is the highest peak of the Wuling Mountains, stretching 8,430 feet above sea level. Draped in dense forests filled with fir trees and Guizhou golden monkeys, it was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in July 2018.

Like Avatar Hallelujah Mountain, Fanjingshan is much taller than it is wide, a vertical pinnacle that resembles a pencil standing on a desk. To reach the top, visitors have to walk up more than 8,000 steps or take a cable car ride up from the road below.

The two temples atop the mountain were each constructed on separate peaks, and guests must cross a small bridge to traverse the crevice between them. There are few more dramatic ways to reach a historic Buddhist temple than by crossing a mountain bridge in the clouds.

Many Buddhists believe Fanjingshan to be the bodhimaṇḍa (place of enlightenment) of Maitreya, the “future Buddha.” According to Buddhist tradition, Maitreya will return to earth in the future to help others reach enlightenment.

It’s unknown exactly when Fanjingshan was first constructed. Buddhism first came to the region in 639 during the Tang Dynasty, and the temples were likely constructed sometime after that. The temples were partially destroyed in the late 1500s during the Bozhou Rebellion, when members of the Miao ethnic group rose up against the Ming Dynasty and looted various sacred sites, but they have since been restored.
