The Woman Who Discovered a Comet… But Her Husband Got the Credit

Maria Margaretha Kirch was one of history’s most overlooked astronomers. On April 21, 1702, while observing the night sky from Berlin, she spotted a new comet—making her the first woman known to discover a comet. But instead of receiving immediate recognition, the discovery was published under her husband, Gottfried Kirch, who was the official astronomer of the Berlin Academy. For years, many believed he had made the discovery, even though his own notes admitted that “my wife found a comet while I slept.” It wasn’t until 1710 that he publicly acknowledged the truth. Despite facing discrimination in a time when women were barred from scientific institutions, Maria continued her astronomical work, publishing observations of comets, sunspots, and the aurora—proving her talent could not be hidden forever.
