What happened to the Spanish settlers who arrived in the territory of Florida back when the peninsula was controlled by the Spanish Empire? Florida is a pretty strange place and contrary to the thriving colonies in neighboring Cuba and Hispaniola, the Spanish struggled to maintain any significant colonial presence in the state, although there were a handful of Spanish colonies in the northern part of the state such as St. Augustine, the oldest surviving European settlement in the contemporary United States. Although their descendants have largely assimilated into mainstream Anglo-American culture, many continue to recognize their roots and maintain some of their unique Spanish heritage.
