Hi. Today I would like to share with you my thoughts on HGV driving in the UK, here are some pros and cons of the job.

We start with the pros and cons l, what do I mean by that. So, for example being a lorry driver you are required to do some crazy hours it can be very common that you are ended up with 15 hour day, that in it self is a double edge sword. On one hand you have just done a massive, massive day where you can't even have a time to rest properly between the shifts. And on the other hand you just earned a decent amount of money if you are working on a hourly rate, so therefore come paycheck you're not to bad financially.

That is bringing us straight to the second point. Pay, Oh boy don't even get me start on that one. I have been asked often how much do you earn. And if you look on websites like Indeed you would be able to find that's some of the companies are advertising the jobs for 40000 or even 50000 pounds. Witch is cool, but for an average person working 36 to 40 hours a week for 30000 pounds that sounds like a lorry driver is getting paid more until you explain to them, that is is possible to get paid 50 grand only if you are willing to put 60 to 70 hour week and possibly sleep in the cab. Once, people realise that, all of the sudden it doesn't sound like you getting paid all that much for working almost twice as much.

Working conditions, is something that I would like to mention as well. Let's start on the trucks it self, from my experience and I must say that I got very lucky as my employers are using a modern fleet of vehicles often Scanias witch are by far my favourite units to drive. Modern vehicles are easy to drive and very comfortable too. I can appreciate that not everyone is that lucky and some of the boys and girls are driving some old and tired looking lorryies. We also should mention service station on UK motorways, and parking availability to have your break. It's generally very busy and it's often hard to get a space, also it's usually cost between 25 to 30 pounds for you to park up for a night in such an establishment. In particular I would like to name and shame Leicester services on the M1 South bound, where potholes are so big, that it is hard to believe that they are allowed to change money for staying there. Those potholes are so big in some places 5 to 8 inches deep. Toilets are usually okay and relatively clean, however I do stay away from them showers, some of them places are so rank that it's hard to describe. I am lucky enough that I don't need to shower at the services as I do get back home most days. There are plenty nice and clean service station around the UK, it probably depending on the management, but chronic lack of secure parking is definitely something that could be work on.

It is the right time to mention about the security, and general work responsibilities. Long story short, the lorry driver is responsible for the other road users in to some degree and his load.
Don't get me wrong here we can't take a responsibility for every dick and Harry out there, however when you are driving a 40 tone truck, them drivers are very aware of the damage that they could cause. Personally myself and also I've witnessed many times that the drivers got out of there way to help and keep the other road users safe. It so often not appropriated enough, but we do look out for more vulnerable road users, it does not need a lot of imagination to know how catastrophic are lorry crashes, especially involving small cars.

Wo often keep an eye for the other drivers, but a lot of the times with lack of secure parking no one is looking after you. Load and diesel theft are the norm in this country. I've personally have been once kidnapped, and the police didn't even bother to turn up. I had to pull my multi tool knife out to scare the intrudes away.

To end the video, let's talk about my favourite thing. It's the freedom and satisfaction. What do I mean by that, you are not locked up in the office for 8 hours a day, looking at the same old people, getting involved in all the office drama. In this game, it is you, machine and the road. Each day will throw a new challenge at you. Definitely this type of work is for the patient ones. Sitting in the traffic all day everyday is character building for sure. That's all from me for today. Let me know in the comments below if you agree with what I said. And maybe you would like to become a lorry driver?
